Session on Proper Post-Harvest Handling of Cinnamon and Ginger
The Diocese of Same Development Department (DSDD) conducted a training session on proper post-harvest handling practices for cinnamon and ginger to enhance product quality, reduce post-harvest losses, and increase market value for farmers.
The session provided participants with practical knowledge and skills on the appropriate methods of harvesting, cleaning, sorting, drying, storage, and packaging of cinnamon and ginger. Farmers were guided on how proper post-harvest handling contributes to maintaining the quality and safety of the produce while meeting market standards.
Participants learned the importance of handling spices carefully throughout the post-harvest process to preserve their aroma, flavor, and nutritional value. The training also emphasized good storage practices that help prevent contamination, spoilage, and unnecessary losses, ultimately improving farmers’ incomes and market opportunities.
Through this initiative, DSDD continues to support smallholder farmers by promoting sustainable agricultural practices and strengthening value chains for spice production. Equipping farmers with post-harvest management skills is an important step toward improving livelihoods and enhancing the competitiveness of locally produced cinnamon and ginger.
