DSDD Conducts Training on Value Chain Development and Soil Fertility Improvement in Same District

DSDD staff recently conducted a training on value chain development alongside the provision of Canavalia seeds to improve soil fertility in selected sub-villages of Same District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The training aimed to strengthen farmers’ understanding of agricultural value chains, focusing on production, processing, and market linkages to enhance income generation and sustainability. In addition, DSDD staff introduced the use of Canavalia (jack bean) as a soil fertility–improving crop, emphasizing its role in nitrogen fixation, soil structure improvement, and long-term land productivity.

During the sessions, participants received practical guidance on planting, management, and the benefits of integrating Canavalia into existing farming systems. The distribution of seeds enabled farmers to immediately apply the knowledge gained and adopt climate-smart and sustainable agricultural practices.

This initiative reflects DSDD’s commitment to supporting smallholder farmers through capacity building and environmentally sustainable interventions that enhance livelihoods and promote resilient agricultural systems.
